One Final Act of Care: Washing, Dressing and Saying Goodbye

Recently, Melanie received a call from the spouse of a person who was approaching the end of their life at home.

As part of their funeral planning, they had contacted their chosen funeral director to clarify what services were included. During that conversation, they learned that washing and dressing their loved one after death would attract an additional fee and would be completed by funeral home staff.

The spouse wasn't upset by this. They simply realised something important. They wanted to be involved.

They wanted to gently wash, shave and dress their person themselves.  However, they didn't feel confident doing it alone and were looking for guidance and support.

We spoke briefly about what was involved and planned to meet the following day to discuss in further detail.  However, that night, their loved one died peacefully at home that night.

Instead of further discussion, the next morning, Melanie arrived with my Gentle After Death Care Kit and together we cared for their person.

There was no rush.

We gently washed and shaved them and dressed them in clothing that had been chosen together with love. Throughout the process, Melanie provided practical guidance and reassurance, while the spouse remained actively involved in every step.

What struck Melanie most was not the practical care itself.

It was the tenderness of the experience.

These final acts of care became an extension of the love and devotion that had already been shown throughout the person's illness.

Rather than feeling hurried into the next task or decision, the spouse was able to spend unhurried time with their loved one, caring for them one last time in a way that felt meaningful and right.

Many people are surprised to learn that families can be involved in caring for their loved one after death. While it is not something everyone will choose, for some people it can be a deeply meaningful final act of love.
